 Staff Accountant Job Description Template 

We are in search of an experienced Staff Accountant to join our financial department. This is a full-time, in-house position. Ideal candidates will possess verifiable work experience in financial roles and hold a degree in accounting, economics or a similar field. Excellent time management skills are required to handle daily tasks, which will include maintaining flawless financial records, reconciling accounts, conducting internal audits, managing employee credit card accounts, and assisting with payroll-related tasks. 

Our Staff Accountant should be familiar with best practices in maintaining a general ledger, know how to utilize software such as Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, and always perform according to the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). They will also have exemplary communication skills and be comfortable corresponding with a diverse team on a daily basis.  

Staff Accountant Responsibilities:   

  • Maintain the company’s general ledger and a variety of financial records.
  • Write financial reports to provide routine updates for department heads, the CEO and shareholders.
  • Review the company’s prior tax records, financial statements and other relevant data to recommend new organizational and reporting strategies.

  • Perform daily bookkeeping tasks and administrative duties.

  • Monitor the company’s financial transactions for appropriate use and ensure accountability and adherence to local, state and federal accounting laws.

  • Gather information and data from necessary parties in order to prepare financial statements, invoices, journal entries and budget sheets.

  • Write invoices and request payment for services to various parties.

  • Maintain a list of businesses, invoices and services to ensure timeliness and accuracy of compensation.

  • Calculate figures for various staff members as-needed

  • Meet with clients and consult with businesses to gather information that may be relevant to tax deductions or grants.

  • Process reimbursement requests.

  • Develop suggestions on how to increase the company’s savings, maximize the budget and improve ROI.

  • Utilize an automated consolidation system to analyze and review balances. 

  • Routinely update financial information on respective spreadsheets and maintain accurate records of expenses, deductions and revenue at all times.

  • Analyze the financial department’s current accounting procedures and make recommendations for improved accuracy and continuity.

  • Answer financial inquiries by researching relevant information regarding tax procedures, protocol and laws.

  • Conduct accounting support to senior accountants and supervisors through a variety of tasks including reconciling accounts, assigning account numbers and requesting disbursements.

  • Conduct balance analyses and update records using Microsoft Excel.

  • Review financial transactions and make budget recommendations.  

  • Prepare and conduct monthly closings and financial reports.  

  • Assist the senior accountant with the annual budget review and audits. 

  • Review payroll records to ensure accuracy and timeliness.  

Staff Accountant Requirements:

  • Must hold a valid bachelor’s degree in accounting, business economics, financial analysis or a similar discipline.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure is strongly preferred.

  • Excellent numeracy and analytical thinking abilities.
  • Logical and detail-oriented problem-solving ideas.

  • Working familiarity with GAAP.

Wage Information
